Monday, 23 December 2013

well it's sure been a while since I've updated this. oops. unfortunately that's not even new...

But this is! Today I was thinking about the future (specifically pertaining to this blog) and decided to explore this fancy website called Blurb.com. Blurb is a site where you can design your books, and I fiddled around with it to my SNEs into a little memoir at the end of the year. Although, I have a lot of slack to catch up on first..

Sunday Dec 22
SNE. Today I lost a small part of my soul. I finally gave in to the culture I've been a part of for 4 months.. and threw eight grocery-bags-worth of pop bottles and plastic into our 'garbage' pile to be burned. Sorry ozone layer.

Also, I finished making two stockings for my teammates! Stockings made of bedsheets and scrap fabric.. they won't last very long.. but they sure we fun to make!

Saturday Dec 21
First epic African Christmas party! Can't say I've ever seen outdoor darts or basketball at a Christmas party before. Also, I played flute to accompany a guitar, jambe, and voices in caroling, lovely!

Dec 8
Something New Everyday. Left Uganda today and arrived in Tanzania! Received a box of goodies from home, a few weeks early. Certainly never done those things before!

Dec 9-17
More Tanzania adventures!

Dec 5
WOW, Some things new! Of course it was my first ever birthday in Africa, kicked off with a beautiful banner and then cupcake for breakfast! Thanks Julie Bainard. Followed with a tour around campus, visiting my own faculty and then exploring the art faculty. Browsed through pottery creations with Clare Patra, and got a mini flower vase, wow, thanks! Next was 'tattoo' time... got thoroughly doodled on by all my Ugandan pals, AAND nicely concluded with an awesome music jam night with Ejuku Mark and Bimisayo Adeyi where I saw an owl and got serenaded from the stage! It's also the longest birthday I've ever had.. starting with yesterday with Indonesian wall posts, lasting a full day in Africa, and continuing for another 9 hours in Canada still!

Thanks everyone for the birthday greetings and for making this a special day!

Tuesday, 19 November 2013

SNE. Today two surprising things happened, but one of them shouldn't have surprised me because it wasn't that new. Firstly, I went to meet my superior about the fact that I'm supposed to preach at church tomorrow.. and he post-poned it until January. Shouldn't have been too surprised about that one ;) BUT, while I was in his office, I got stung by a bee! Twice! First time getting stung by an African bee, coooool!

Monday November 18
Finally got my VISA extended (take 3!) Also, pretty sure this is the first time ever that I've gotten a tan while Christmas shopping! ;)

Sunday November 17
Back-to-back episodes of sermons with Norm Miller! Had home church today and worked on my preparations for my first ever sermon preaching later this week. Also back-to-back episodes and season finale of Korra, one week before it airs in Canada, ooooh!

Saturday November 16
Whew! Today had a handful of surprises. Here's the full list:

1) 2 Great Blue Turacos in the yard this morning, cool!

2) finally got our car trunk open
3) rising anticipation for November Christmas party (tonight!)
4) someone discarded a dog carcass outside our gate... not cool.
5) went to a Christmas bazaar in town... apparently we aren't the only ones who are early...
6) made Christmas cookies! in November!
7) Didn't actually make it to the Christmas party.. we tried... Got a little lost. Then a little more, and after 2 hours decided to go back home, which took another hour indulged in coca cola and Christmas cookies and picked a movie at random to console ourselves, turns out it was actually a Christmas movie!

all in all, a mysterious day filled with Christmas miracles. sort of.

Friday November 15
Our day off in Fort Portal. We visited the sights, saw the caves named after breasts (because of the stalagmites and -tites), saw the Rwenzori mountains, and also, for the first time ever, saw crater lakes formed by ancient volcanic activity. cool!

Thursday November 14
SNE. I spoke at another primary school this morning and then proceeded to take my first official sick day working with Power to Change. I got food poisoning.. and it was my own fault... I just really liked the pizza we ordered the other day, but I guess it wasn't meant to be enjoyed over the course of a few days. oops. haha. I couldn't hold ANY food down today, I tried.. but then I puked. :)

Wednesday November 13
WOW! We've been speaking to University students thus far, but today we got to visit primary schools too. I had the amazing opportunity to speak to over a THOUSAND kids today about the love of Jesus! Never done that before!

Tuesday November 12
We returned to UPU today and got to meet lot of lovely new people, students and teachers alike. We began teaching and speaking to the interested student leaders and got a taste of what ministry is like in Western Uganda :)

Monday November 11
And we're off! First time ever visiting the wonderful city of Fort Portal. Wow, western Uganda has mountains and is quite a bit cooler than Kampala temperatures, and it's very pretty! We made it to campus in the evening and met the students of Uganda Pentecostal University for the first time ever. Something New Everyday!

Sunday, 10 November 2013

Something New Everyday. I found tortilla chips at the store! That's right, with some expensive cheese, some tomatoes, and salsa spices we had a nacho party! Also tried out the new-and-improved (sharpened) hedge trimmers on the bushes today.

Saturday Nov 9
Wandered around the neighbourhood again today and discovered a cheap place for eggs and bananas, time for baking! First time making Mama's Famous Krispie Cookies.. though I tweaked the recipe slightly due to lack of chocolate chips.. TIA. Also first guys night at the house (don't worry, I hid and watched a movie in my room).

Friday Nov 8

I made sure not to post this one on facebook.. it's the first time I've ever intentionally, purposely, and independently listened to One Direction....SHHhhh don't tell!

Thursday Nov 7
Something New Everyday. Learned some new Luganda phrases today, just the basics, of course, simply phrases that I'm likely to use a lot. "It's raining. Bim is cold. Julie is sick. I am dirty. See you later." The basics. ;)

Also, I wore my "aladdin" pants in public today... Wasn't sure if it was socially acceptable, but no one stared or laughed any more than usual, so I may yet do it again!

Wednesday Nov 6
SNE. I saw two Brown Parrots today! And we had our first team.. "party".. in honour of Jamie's birthday..? Maybe! Who knows? Our music and games sure weren't as fun as they would've been if Hom Jom planned it tho...

Tuesday Nov 5
Something New Everyday. I saw THREE woodpeckers on the same telephone pole today! I've never seen more than one at a time before, cooool! Also, 'twas my first time leading bible study with the expats tonight.

Monday Nov 4

Sunday Nov 3

Saturday Nov 2

Friday, 1 November 2013

Happy November! It seems my body is pretending it's in Canada and has decided to come down with a cold. Never caught a cold in Africa before.... SNE.

October 31
SNE. First ever "Halloween" in Uganda.. except it's not really a thing here. Nonetheless, we had a fake jack-o-lanturn and some candy!
October 30
I made REAL chocolate chip cookies, with REAL chocolate chips. First time for that here in Africa!

October 29
Today we ventured to the other side of Kampala, further than we'd gone yet! Took us an hour to persevere through traffic and find our new bible study location, and under 20 minutes to get back home. Good ol' Kampala traffic!

Also, I burnt the roof of my mouth on food today.. I've never done that before.. and I don't plan on doing it again.

October 28
Walked through my neighbourhood and made my way to a coffee shop for a date with God. It went well, he's pretty romantic
October 27SNE. Just attended my first ever formal Ugandan dinner party! Thanks to the Life Ministry ladies for putting it together.

October 26
A Saturday event?? First time I've been up at the crack of dawn and getting to campus on a Saturday, eager for our international speakers to present. Although it's not the first time that I've expected something to start on time... and it started 2 hours late.. TIA.

October 25
Today I met a handful of important people! First time I'd met Judy Douglass, wife of president of campus crusade international, and some African women leaders too. Really excited for the seminars they are leading tomorrow at MUK!

October 24
Definitely had a new experience today working with the ministry. We had a speaker come in and talk about social evils. It was an interesting "conflict of cultures", where the Ugandans loved every word he said, but we Canadians felt quite awkward and uncomfortable. In a nutshell.

October 23
SNE. First time I'd seen pastor Bim take the stage, well done!

October 22
Something New Everyday. Today I met some new neighbours. Wow. They are refugees fleeing persecution from their country for being Christian. God keeps opening my eyes to the freedoms and wealth we have in North America, we take so much for granted.

Monday, 21 October 2013

Something New Everyday. I just found this handsome fellow in our backyard, never seen an African Goshawk before! Also, discovered my new favourite home/comfort food place, little restaurant at the mall has sweet and sour pork!

Sunday October 20
My housemates tried something new and the renters of our small house were out, which means I got the whole compound to myself for the first time ever! Partied it up with loud music, lots of baking, and a beautiful sunset!

Saturday October 19
Our Campus Classics outreach week has begun! Today was the first time I'd been to school so early on a Saturday, and first time I've seen so many guild leaders from Universities across Uganda.

October 18
Something New Everyday. Actually, a few things and one still to come in just a few minutes. On our road trip today I hit a new record with Eagle sightings, I definitely saw 4 (possibly 6) of these funny feathered fellows:

Alsoo, we got our house and compound fumigated today, so for the first time tonight and then also the next few nights, I get to sleep without a mosquito net!!!!! yay!

October 17
Something New Everyday!! Had my first all-women meeting with Life Ministry Uganda. Are we more efficient than the group as a whole? Mm nope... Let's just leave it at that

Alsooo, I discovered a secret addiction of one of my teammates.. and downloaded the first episode of this season of Survivor! Lots of Survivor fun to come
— with Julie Bainard.

October 16
Something New Everyday. As international staff/intern with LIFE Ministry UgandaPower to Change - Students I have a conference in January with my fellow coworkers... and it's in Spain! I've just booked my ticket to Spain, never done that before!!

October 15
Another holiday? Apparently it's Eid in Uganda, no one's on campus, no one's at work.. so, party in the morning and first Life Ministry dinner invite in the evening! splendid

October 14

October 13
Oh ya, so SNE. Obviously. First thanksgiving in Africa (also first one without turkey). AND I discovered one of my favourite plants in our yard and transplanted some for my enjoyment! Mimosa pucida, I hope I spelled that right, the plant that closes up when you touch it. Coool.

October 12
Made an unfortunately pointless drive to jinja today to renew our visas.. which can't actually be done on saturday, apparently. Nonetheless, we still got to swim, shop around, and visit our South African friends in their home for the first time. Also, first time I saw about 40 fruits bats swarming the skies during the day! Fancy that!

October 11
Something New Everyday. It's girls night at the "Canadian parliament"! Eleven lovely ladies and a whole lot of fun!

October 10

October 9
SNE, lots of new things today! First time I've acknowledged Uganda Independence Day and first time I made scones (following Vanessa's recipe, yum!).

October 8

October 7
SNE. Attempted to make buttermilk today, seeing as it's not available in the store. Unfortunately, after shaking the jar for what seemed like eons, I gave up, with only a few curdles to show for it. I'll try a different method later...

October 6
Today! I think we finally found church to belong to here. After much browsing, we've come across Berea church, who tests everything against the Bible! woohoo!

October 5
First time I'd celebrated a spiritual birthday. We lacked balloons but not much else, congrats Julie! Also, my computer came back to life, I've named it Lazarus.

October 4
Our first Food and Fun event on campus, about 50 students came, woohoo! And I deposited my computer at a trustworthyish shop to get my hard drive replaced.

October 3
Started my day with a Skype call from Africa to Indonesia, never done that before! Thanks Agnes. Also had a great day on campus: entered a dorm room of 8 people and had some great convos! Aaand, it finally happened! My laptop keeled over hard drive malfunction. R.I.P Diepbord

October 2

Tuesday, 1 October 2013

Happy October!. Today is the international prayer and fasting day for Campus Crusade for Christ International! My first ever all-day prayer and fun with LIFE Ministry Uganda, the Ugandan branch of CCC.

Monday September 30
Today is my brother's birthday. I tried calling while I was bored and stuck in traffic, but that didn't work out so well. On the bright side, we did discover a new "short-cut" that allows us to bypass the heavy traffic outside of MUK campus. Also, I spent a good 20 minutes wandering around the grocery store today looking for buttermilk, to no avail. TIA. SNE.

Sunday, 29 September 2013

Today I sat side-saddle on a boda-boda (motorbike) for the first time ever, easy peasy. :)

Saturday September 28
Just got home from our time in Gulu, though we had a slightly wet ride. In order to prevent the windshield from steaming up, we had to have the windows partially down.. in a thunderstorm. Got home slightly soggy, but we got home!

Friday September 27
Another full day at Gulu University! We met the Life Ministry student leaders, taught and encouraged them, and got to know them (maybe a little too well?) I asked my favourite get-to-know-you question: "If you could be any animal, what you want to be" and had two unique responses: Zebra, and a Peacock! Ha, interesting. We also discovered a quaint little Pork Joint and had quite the exciting lunch time adventure.

Thursday September 26
Today was our first full day at Gulu University. Met the student leaders for the first time and toured the new campus. At night we played "Hot Seat" with our boss (a game where one person is under scrutiny, while everyone else peppers them with every question under the sun!) Haha, never done that before!

Wednesday September 25
SNE. Today was our travel day. First time we made what would be a 4-hour trip in Canada in just under 6 hours! And we actually made good time, somehow. Good ol' African pot holes.....

Tuesday September 24
SNE. Today I found the biggest moth I've ever seen!!
Monday September 23
Brief power outage tried to dampen our fun, but instead I baked brownies by candlelight! Not the first time I have appreciated having a gas oven.
Sunday September 22
Today I gave home church a try and was not disappointed. Glad that sermons from home can be found online!

Saturday September 21
We had our first LMU training meeting of the year, and then my homies and I got some lovely movies for just 2000 shillings a piece! Never done that before!

Friday September 20
Something new everyday. Spent a good 20 minutes shooting markers at this paper with a slingshot and I finally got it! I gave up trying to hit the circle tho... Ignore that. Thanks Vanessa for leaving some markers behind!
I also (fiinnaallly) watched the first episode of the new season of Korra today. It only took 3 days of downloading, one day of computer wiping, another 2 days of downloading, and then downloading the proper viewer program. It's only been a week since it came out!

Thursday September 19

Wednesday September 18
SNE. Performed a full system recovery on my computer today and made it like new again! Hopefully the problems it's been having will now be fewer.

Yesterday I painstakingly moved all my files off my computer, which took most of the day as safe mode kept freezing every 6 minutes! A new and not-enjoyable experience. Hmm

Tuesday September 17

Monday September 16
Something New Everyday. Spent the day with LMU staff and students painting the office building. All it needs now is the final coat, and boy, does it look smart!

Sunday September 15
Church service ended early because the pastor's voice was being drowned out by a thunderstorm. Never had that before!

Saturday September 14
Today's SNE involved going over an unmarked and unexpected speed bump at ... 80km/h. Oops. Got a little air on that one. Thanks for keeping us on our toes, Africa.

Friday September 13

Thursday September 12

Wednesday September 11

Tuesday September 10

Monday September 9

Sunday September 8

Saturday, 7 September 2013

Today I had a lovely "coffee date" (quotation marks because it was neither coffee nor "date") with none other than a fellow Londoner and Western student! It was so nice to connect with Theresa, who I hadn't seen since first year University!

Friday, 6 September 2013

Something New Everyday. Today I showed my housemates a new side of my character: I played music for them in the car. hehe. That consisted of The Apple Song by Calibretto 13 and a bunch of bouncy Disney songs. Also got to spend lunch hour with some awesomely dedicated students from MUBs campus. Good day!

Thursday September 5
Today I employed my brand new full-year calendar. Who knew those actually existed? I feel so organized now that I can have an entire year's plan on one wall of my living room

Wednesday September 4
SNE. Today was my first ever African choir/dance party/guest peaker/welcome the mzungus/comedy night on MUBs campus. Quite entertaining if I do say so myself.

Tuesday September 3
Today was my first time going door-to-door with the student leaders of Life Ministry Uganda sharing the gospel and connecting with students in their dorms. Also discovered a new expat bible to be a part of, who knew there were so many other white people in Uganda?!

Monday September 2
Surprise! The campus we planned to be on this week is still closed. Such is Africa. Nonetheless something new did happen, for this was my first time ever on the Makerere University Business school campus!

Sunday September 1
Something New Everyday. Had an epic puddle jump/ dancing-in-the rain party with the housemates today, followed by hot tea and my favourite Christmas sweater.. in Uganda. Never done that before!

Saturday August 31
SNE. Today I had a lovely jam session.. with myself. First time playing my flute in Africa!

Friday August 30
Today's SNE involved getting stuck in a traffic jam downtown Kampala.. wait, that's not new.. um. we got stuck in traffic and moved a few metres in an hour. But that's ok, cuz we had some nice tunes, and some popcorn, and some Bim and Julie to keep the fun alive.
Thursday August 29
Had my first Africa-to-Canada Skype call today with relatively good internet connection. Woo! 'Twas nice to see the fam jam again.
Wednesday August 28
Had my first 5 hour-long African planning meeting today. Haha, guess I need to get used to the different views of time in this culture.

Tuesday, 27 August 2013

SNE. mmm tastes like home. Today I made banana bread in a gas oven in Africa, never done that before! Also, yesterday's computer analyses did not solve my problems, so I've resorted to uninstalling Google Chrome and settling for Firefox. Bad idea?.. well, it solved my issues!

Monday August 26
In addition to joining the Life Ministry Uganda prayer meeting for the first time as a staff member, I also learned how to run a memory test on my computer. Hopefully that solves my problems!

Sunday August 25
SNE. Took a boda boda tour around Kampala with my pals today and saw the seven hills and many other well-known landmarks.

Saturday August 24
Came across a snake in the bathroom not half an hour ago! Never had that happen before. Lucky Ocean Teale wasn't here this year Most likely the "African House Snake" no big deal.. except that while deciding how to deal with it.. we misplaced it. oops.

Friday August 23
Today I bought a Uganda bird book and already crossed 6 birds off my list! 1 Hadada Ibis, 1 Eastern grey Plantain-eater, 1 Pink-backed pelican, and 3 various sunbirds. (and NO, fellow stinters, I won't be taking my book into any forbidden parks...)

Thursday, 22 August 2013

After the joy of hooking up our internet in Uganda we experienced our first power outtage overnight. Aaand due to leaving lights on that didn't need to be left on, we also drained our back-up power, leaving us internet-less again. (until now of course!)

Wednesday August 21
Put my life into the hands of our fellow team mate Bimisayo who drove in Uganda for the very first time. Driving in Uganda is kinda just a free for all, no lights or signs, drive on the left-hand side, as our friend and guide Uncle James said "you just use your instinct"

Tuesday August 20
Arrived in Uganda in the pm and experienced the biggest "oh shoot, what have we gotten ourselves into" I've ever felt. We picked up from the airport by 2 friends and then MOVED IN, like actually moved into Uganda. Not just visiting. Now I live here :)

Monday August 19
SNE. Jumped (figuratively) onto a plane with my team and said farewell to North America until next year. Never done that before! Also, made a friend from Sweden in the airport, a Christian gal who liked my GK Chesterton book. what class!

Wednesday, 14 August 2013

Something New Everyday. Today for the first time ever, I was the only Canadian in a room of 60 Americans. W'all (opposite of y'all?) had a great time. Also had deep dish Chicago pizza and did some fun personality assessment using the Birkmann method. Luckily, I'm doing multiple new things these days, 'cause I've slacked a little in the last month.. :)

Tuesday August 13, 2013
Got up bright and early and said farewell to 494 Oakridge Drive. Made it to Toronto in time for a breakfast date with my dad and bro before jumping on a plane once again. Flew to the Windy City for the first time ever, met the rest of my Uganda team, AND had chicken shwarma wraps for dinner. So much new!!

Monday August 12
SNE. I packed up my things for one final time! Never before have I packed up my entire belongings, everything to either a box or a suitcase. Off to Chicago and soon to Uganda!

Tuesday, 6 August 2013

Monday August 5

Today I went for a neat nature walk with some of my favourite wilderness explorers and saw TWO different endangered turtle species, and then we happened to cross paths with a 12-pack of deer. Isn't that neat?! Never done that before!

Sunday August 4

Huh. So apparently skirts aren't great for climbing trees. Today I climbed a tree with my monkey friend Lily, and I split my skirt! lol Then my 4 other friends joined us in the tree, but luckily I'm good at keeping secrets... except when I turn around and blog about it.... Also learned how to "twist" hair today. It's like braiding, but not. Thanks Lily!

Saturday August 3

SNE. Returning home from a week at the cottage, and finally found an elite icecream shop! I had S'more and White chocolate raspberry. Soooo much icecreammm!

Friday August 2
Floating lanturns.

Some time this week I saw two Massasauga rattlesnakes for the first time ever!!

Also past a water snake swimming inland while were swimming outward.. never had that before! Not only that, but this snake was carrying a decent-sized fish and I got to watch it mow down. cool!

Up in the Bruce Peninsula area at a cottage for the week.

Tuesday, 9 July 2013

SNE. Today the nesting duck next door was robbed of her eggs by the nasty raccoons! We've seen foxes rob nests before, but this one is new!

Monday July 8
The London Airport returned our guests to us today! The weather prevented all flights connected to Toronto from leaving, so we gladly re-received Ben and Erin VanderMeulen! Any excuse to spend more time with the cousins :)

Tuesday, 2 July 2013

I have been a camper at Camp Shalom for 8 or so years, in the discipleship program for one year, and on  staff for two years now, and today I was invited to return as a guest speaker!  SNE

Monday, 1 July 2013

Oooh I've been a little MIA.. ok, catching up:

I often have people think that I am younger than I actually am.. but today.. *sigh*
Someone was trying to guess the ages of my sister and I, and said "you're in highschool, right? I said "Well, my sister is". She said "Oh, you're not in elementary school still are you?" Seriously??? I know, I know, I'll appreciate it someday...

Sunday June 30
First day of summer camp 2013! I'm not on staff this year, but I did get to meet all of this year's NEW crew! Also had the splendid experience of being recognized by Jadeyn Stelpstra, who informed me she was going to have a camp fire and Marshpillows :)

Saturday June 29
Played the best game of Canasta ever! Got 1500 points on the first hand (take 5000 to win the game), and in the last round we needed 900 to win, and we got over 2000! Lots of luck, but still, never had that before!

Friday June 28
SNE. Went to camp in the Family Camp area at Camp Shalom for the weekend and got caught in the rain. I've set up tents in the rain before, but this time the weather cleared up an hour after we set up everything! Soggy luck!

Saturday, 22 June 2013

Today was the first time since returning from Indonesia that I admitted that Canada was warm. Happy second day of summer! And I celebrated this by going in the pool for the first time this year, and drinking my last Ugandan Alvaro!

Friday June 21
Not overly exciting. Today I started reading a new book. I should more often.. I miss it.

Thursday, 20 June 2013

Ok, ready? Here goes: I willingly, purposefully, and even deliberately swallowed a pill (Ibuprofen) just to ease a minor headache! I know, right?!! I have truly never done that before! (usually I just deal with it or go to bed.) All of this world travelling and mandatory malarone-taking has really impacted the way I see drugs.. look out world!

Wednesday June 19
SNE. some new Costco-related things: I spent half an hour trying to get 300ish pictures printed, it wasn't supposed to take that long! Then we bought a new asian stirfry mix and some interesting new milkshake-powder-stuff that's "just add water". interesting. it wasn't actually too bad..

Tuesday, 18 June 2013

Something New Everyday. Today I abducted a toad from my backyard and added it to my terrarium. It's pretty chubby, maybe it will have tadpoles for me!

Monday, 17 June 2013

Today I FINALLY finished uploading all my Indonesia pictures and spent hours rearranging them because facebook put them in an illogical order... Now officially ready for viewing! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151497468428879.1073741825.509313878&type=3

Sunday June 16
Something New Everyday. A few things actually: we ran out of vanilla icecream (my fault) so I tried Moosetracks on my rhubarb crisp.. not a fan. We also gave some of the rabbits free reign in the yard today and were quite surprised to see Eeyore frolicking like a puppy! He even came when we called him! Lastly, we also headed the weather channel's warning for the first time ever, and moves our board game downstairs to avoid the tornado... Which was actually just rain and hail for about 10 minutes... lots of new! Oh, and Happy Father's day!

Saturday June 15
I spent today with this handsome man while his parents got married. Good times eh Cooper? Congrats to Tammy and Shawn Hedges!
Friday June 14
My parents were out today so I decided to clean up the kitchen a bit, but my mom has all these fancy cloths and sweepers and chemicals and I didn't know which to use. So I ended up the wrong soapy substance and having to wash the floor multiple times to get the suds out. Something new I don't plan on repeating! ;)

Thursday June 13
SNE. Aujourd'hui I did lots of crafting. I worked on some more Batik-style artwork..BUT it was raining outside. So, in order to hang them up to dry, I put them on our clothes rack, under an umbrella. Lol, never done that before!
Wednesday June 12
Today's Something New involved animals. We finally chose a name for the new bunny: Domino, and I left her unattended on my carpeted floor for 10 minutes (don't tell the parents!) Also, bahaha, I saw a bird running through the grass and then trip and fall down. That's the real highlight of my day!

Tuesday June 11
I joined the ladies of former Emmanuel Church for their monthly meeting for the first time today. it also happened to be the last meeting until Fall.. and more of a lunch buffet than a meeting...

Monday June 10
Today I had a few wonderful 'meetings'. Enjoyed lunch with Kaitlyn Cowperthwaite, then surprised Emily Brix during recess. I joined Britt Vos as she sahred about her Uganda trip with a class full of grade twos. Never done any of that before! :)

Sunday June 9
Today, my first ever adult baptism service, congrats Malcolm! Also went to a bbq dinner with a very last minute invite from someone other than the host...

Saturday, 8 June 2013

SNE. We have a new member of the family today. Sold 5 rabbits at the market and brought home a lovely black-and-white doe! Also made a new friend at the market, a little boy who bought and showed me his two ducklings: Rosebud and Max.

Friday June 7
Taking Robin's advice from yesterday's post I tried out a new dye today. I boiled onion and garlic skins to make a yellow dye for my painting, it worked quite well! Also started watching the new tv series Hannibal today. Interesting.

Thursday June 6
Something new everyday. Today I tried making some classic Batik-style artwork based on the paintings I saw in Indonesia and Uganda. This is step one: sketching and wax on white fabric. I'm trying to find dyes that won't wash out in water, what do you think is better: acrylic paint, fabric marker, or mustard?

Wednesday June 5
SNE. Today I invented a new rabbit cage by attaching two top-halves of cages together resulting in one spacious, 4-door, easy grass access pen. Lovely. Also mailed a letter at quarter after eleven in the evening. Never done that before..

Tuesday, 4 June 2013

Something New Everyday: a series of free movies.

The story begins on Christmas eve 2012. My parents took my siblings and I to see The Hobbit, my dad's treat. During the previews the movie turned pink and then stopped playing, so we got apologies from the staff and 2 free tickets each. We went back the next day to see The Hobbit for 'free'. My second ticket finally got it's use today when I went to see Star Trek with Allison Branch and Frietzen VanderMeulen. Halfway during the movie the video cut out, got fixed, cut out, got fixed, and then cut out again. We were given apologies from the staff and 2 free tickets each. We had dinner in the mall and then went to watch Now You See Me (which, by the way, is an EXCELLENT movie!). I have still have free tickets.. what should I see next?

Monday June 3
Committing to memorizing some new bible verses, not that I haven't done that before, but there are obviously many verses I've never attempted memorizing before. To start: Colossians 2:13-23, which holds many concepts that counter our culture's views of Christianity.

For example, verse 16: "And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross". Quite logical and profound to the Christian, quite the opposite to the unbeliever..

Sunday June 2
SNE. Today we met some new neighbours. A lady and her 3-yr peeked through the bushes at our campfire and then we invited them in to see the bunnies. It's a good thing I have rabbits.. it's hard to make friends and meet the neighbours without them..  ;)

Saturday June 1
Something New Everyday. Today is the first time we've made more than $500 at a garage sale! Thanks so much to all the neighbours who helped with this fundraiser for my mission trip to Uganda!!

Thursday, 30 May 2013

Today I finished digging up the patchy grass around our tree where nothing actually grows well. Made a nice oval "garden" and filled it with lovely mulch. A pretty yard as a birthday present to my pa.

Wednesday May 29
SNE. Today I personally invited my parents' friends for dinner, made dinner, and hosted the evening while my parents went out for my sister's band concert... never done that before!

Tuesday May 28
Today I did something I've never done before, but it's a secret, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

(secret revealed: I made icecream cake for my dad's birthday! Two cakes actually: mocha fudge and raspberry. yummm)

Monday May 27
Normally when we cut our grass in the backyard we cut from the house to the back, move the trampoline, and cut the other half. Apparently it's good to switch the direction that you cut so your grass doesn't grow long and slanted. We gave our trampoline away last week so I finally am able to cut lengthwise in one go! Woohoo!

Also, I road over a bumble bee with my bike today Never done that before!

Sunday May 26
Something New Everyday. Now, I don't mean to offend churches... or maybe I do.. but today I felt more welcome than I had in a long time. I went to a church where I didn't know anyone, and before I sat down I was genuinely greeted 5 times, two I'd which became actual conversations. Before I'd left, that was doubled, and it didn't feel fake at all.

In addition, I taught my dad how to use kijiji today and we sold this table saw within three hours! Never done that before!

Saturday, 25 May 2013

Something New Everyday! Today I wore my new chinese capri/pants that my mom handed down because she thinks they're weird. They are weird, but I like them. And then I wore them in public-- to Harvest London's prayer and worship night (which was also a new thing for me to attend). Grandiose.

Friday May 24
Today I took advantage of Greyhound's wifi service and had my first cross-Canada conference call... on a bus. Consequently it was a little choppy... but it worked!

Thursday May 23
SNE. Chilling in Guelph and hanging out with lovely people, this is the first time I've been to St. Jacob's market without my parents! #growingup. :)

Wednesday, 22 May 2013

While I've spent many a year in both London and Guelph, and (obviously) been transported back and forth many times, today was the first time I made that trip via bus! Thanks for pointing that out Jo-lu! It was also the first time a lunch date turned into a full day hangout, and I'm not complaining! :)

Tuesday May 21
Today I went for chicken wings and a movie with my brother and his friends.. which has happened before, but the new thing is that this is the first time I've been downtown London passed midnight. My own city! How sad is that?

Monday May 20
SNE. Today I had the unfortunate displeasure of seeing my brother put on a child-size t-shirt with a butterfly on it. It didn't fit, obviously.

In addition, thanks to my uncle, I learned a new word: contumeliously. Mind you, I spent 3 minutes trying to pronounce it correctly....

Sunday, 19 May 2013

Something New Everyday. Well. Today I got fired from my landscaping job via message on the answering machine. Huh. My dad quit the other day because the boss was harsh and difficult to work with.. so I think I just got fired out of spite. Oh well, such is life!

Saturday May 18
Today was my first official house call for talking about my internship in Uganda. I visited a friend and saw 4 of my former babysit kids who were half a foot taller! I had a lovely evening :)

Friday May 17
SNE. Today I went downtown london with a crew from Harvest bible chapel London, heard some street preaching for the first time, and made some friends. Cool!

Thursday May 16
Today I was more frustrated at work than I've ever been in my life, and that's saying something! My dad and I work side-by-side and came home with the mutual consensus that our boss is not nice and we should quit. Huh. New things are not always fun.

Wednesday May 15
Today I started an experiment I've never done before: I'm trying get roots to grow from our tree branches so I can cut off and a plant a miniature tree (bonsai tree!) The pic shows the branch with moss and saran wrap around it. Hope it works!

Tuesday May 14
I wasn't planning on telling anyone this... But then I realized I didn't have a something new yet... So..

SNE. Today I stepped on a hoe and it sprang up and smacked me in the face, cartoon-style. It hurt.
It wasn't accidental tho.. sorta. I was trying to get the handle off the ground.. but I fear it may bruise, lol.

Monday May 13
Well, I've worked with this landscaping company for a little while now, I've dug dirt and raked mulch, and even shoveled snow in the winter. Usually the summer jobs and the winter jobs are quite separate and distinct, but today I had the lovely privilege of raking, shoveling, and lifting... while it was snowing!! Just another day in Canada, a chilly and fun day in May.

Sunday May 12- Mother's Day
Today is mom's day and I visited my Oma and a few relatives.. that was kinda new. Also, I got play-by-play updates on my phone of my good friend's sister who had a lovely baby on mother's day! So cool! Congrats Jenn+Kevin!

Saturday, 11 May 2013

SNE. Today I tried to go the whole day without using my thumbs (for the sake of something new... and inspired by the fact that I burned my thumb yesterday..). It was quite interesting. Let me say that I have certainly come to appreciate having thumbs.

Some things I found difficult were: putting in contacts, taking out contacts, making a pony-tail (seriously, try it without thumbs!), playing wii (I actually gave in for a little while so I actually had a chance of beating my sister..), taking loaded cookie sheets out of the oven, giving thumbs up, and typing this! Something New Everyday.

Friday May 10
Last night I prayed for rain and this morning I got to sleep in and skip work because of the rain! ..Then it stopped raining and I started a 9-hour work day at 11am. huh. Never done that before!

Thursday May 9
SNE. not too exciting, but new. Today I had a 4-way, international skype call. coool. Thumbs up for technology. ha. thumbs.

Wednesday, 8 May 2013

Today's Something New comes courtesy of chef-meister Peter, who made real Chinese food for us! Who knew eggplant doesn't actually taste as weird as it sounds?! Thanks for dinner, Pete!

Tuesday, 7 May 2013

SNE. hmm what strange and novel things happened today? Well, I saw some snakes at work.. and I learned how to use a very important tool in my kitchen: the special one-cup coffee maker, and I washed my pet in the sink before showing it to a friend. Never done that before. What kind of strange pet requires that?

Answer: Bert the frog.
P.S. I recently re-obtained Bert after lending him to a friend while I was on vacation. Apparently while I was gone Bert ate two lizards.. who were supposed to be his friends.. monster frog.
P.P.S. I think Bert is female.

Monday, 6 May 2013

Unexpected things keep happening at work. Today we got the wrong address for a house we were supposed to clean up, which is a rare thing, and then when we found the right address, we were told to come back another time because they had guests, another rare thing! The consequence of that was getting to go home early, yay! I don't mind when rare things happen at work :)

In addition, I learned some fascinating facts about sea pigs and sea cucumbers and how to differentiate them from their land namesakes.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_y4DbZivHCY Warning: there is some 'potty' language ;)

Oh, and update on yesterday's SNE, the bunny survived the night but not the day, it died while I was at work. Sad, but such is life sometimes.

Sunday May 5
We've been having some issues with baby bunnies dying due to a neglectful mother, and so today, for the first time ever, I have confiscated a baby from its mom, hand fed it, and am keeping on the heater in my extra aquarium. I hope it survives the night!

Saturday May 4
SNE  today involved a weird 3-hour work shift.. I was told I was needed to work Saturdays, and the boss had me do a 12-hour only a few days ago.. so this 3 hour day was quite unexpected.
Also learned a new board game, sorta: Ticket to Ride- Asia edition, where you play with a partner!

Friday May 3
Something new everyday. Today was an odd day filled with animals and death and stuff. Our bunny had 4 babies yesterday but 1 died overnight. We tried to nurse back the others and they vary in their current state if health. Today at work I saw one large snake (garter probs), two mating toads, two dead rodents, one dead frog, lots of roadkill, aaand my dad brought home a dog jaw bone for me! Hurray! Interesting day, what will tomorrow bring? ;)
Thursday May 2
I'm kinda technologically challenged, but today I figured out how to do video calls via gmail! Gmail can do vid calls three-way and Skype can only do vid two-way. Cool huh? Thanks for teaching me, Jessica Chu!

Wednesday May 1
Something new every single day. Today was the first time I have ever worked a twelve-hour day! Up at 6:30 am, start at 8am, finally back home at 8:30ish pm. Whew! A long, hot day full of hard work. Bed, here I come! — with Art VanderMeulen

Tuesday, 30 April 2013

Today I learned how to use a leaf blower and a line edger. The line edger makes lines and the leaf blower blows leaves AND grass and stuff. Lots of fun! My favourite power tools so far!

Monday April 29
Something New Everyday. Today was my first official day landscaping with Vanderley Landscaping! (Snow removal was a test run.) I got to wear the official uniform AND got official blisters! Now I have two full-time jobs, yay! ...

Sunday April 28
Today my little sister turns 16! Awww. I have also concluded a weekend of internship training and am officially employed by Power to Change! In addition, I moved out of my Hamilton home today and back to London, I have moved before, of course, but this is the start of a new job phase in my life. Something New Everyday.

Saturday, 27 April 2013

SNE. Day 2 of Internship training, first FULL day ;) ;) First time I've met a STINTer going to Japan, first time I've drank (just) hot water in Canada and been told it was a good idea. First time I've caught a frisbee more than 4 times consecutively , I AM getting better!

Friday April 26
Today is the first day of Power to Change Internship training. The place where a bunch of university grads get together and sign away a year of their life. Woohoo! — with Bimisayo Adeyi and Garrett Randle.

Thursday, 25 April 2013

Something New Everyday. Today I went Go-Karting in downtown Hamilton to celebrate a friend's full-year of sobriety! I've gone go-karting before, but never at these facilities, and I've never before t-boned a full grown man causing him to spin into the pit stop. Hehehe.

Wednesday, 24 April 2013

Aujourd'hui c'est mercredi le 24 avril. I am apparently not well educated in important Canadian films, so today I had the delightfully interesting opportunity to remedy that... by watching a Toronto-made movie called Scott Pilgrim vs the world, which is a videogame-style movie where the main character has to battle 7 evil ex-es on order to date the girl with pink hair. blue hair. green hair. whatever. Now I feel so well cultured, thanks Peter.

Tuesday, 23 April 2013

I am home and have reliable internet connection, hurray! Time to fill you in on the adventures of the last month and a bit.. :)

Today, Tuesday April 23, I updated more than a month's worth of blog posts! Whew! I hope I never have to do that again, haha.

Monday April 22
Today was the first time I'd made more than minimum wage working in my backyard. Thanks for taking care of me, parents :) Also, I started online training for a new job that starts Monday! SNE

Sunday April 21
Something New Everyday. Back in Canada!! Today I played the new WiiU for the very first time! I also heard an online talk by Ray Comfort, it was good!

Saturday April 20
So.. I've sat on a plane before... and I've sat on a plane for a loooong time before... but I've never been to Turkey before! After 11 hours of flying we had an 8 hour layover and then 11 more hours of flying. We left Malaysia at midnight and arrived in Canada at 7pm. Yay, time travel! We had Indian food for dinner in Toronto with 86% of my immediate family and then drove to London and called it a day... a long day.. :)

Friday April 19
This is my second time leaving Kuala Lumpur.. so it's not something new... But we didn't leave until midnight, so I had all day to explore. We were planning on hitchhiking to a waterfall we'd heard about, so we tried. I'd never hitchhiked before, so that was new, but the guys who pulled over didn't know where the falls were. So instead they brought us to a big Chinese temple which we explored for an hour, and then they came to pick us up again and bring us back! Haha, super nice! We shopped and had more fun, and eventually ended up on the plane heading home.

Thursday April 18
Got on our plane nice and early this morning and paid one last lovely fee to the Indonesian government: 100,000Rp each for using the airport. Goodbye Indonesia, haha! Aaaand we arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Within the first 2 hours of being in Malaysia I saw 5 birds that I had not seen in the wild in 7 weeks of being in Indonesia! We took a train to Putrajaya, met our couchsurfing host, toured the city a bit, and had dinner with the family. SNE.

Wednesday April 17
Today is the first last full day I've had in Indonesia ever!! Haha.

Our friends took us to Rammang-Rammang today, a neat little village one hour outside of Makassar. We took a shallow boat down a little river and discovered a hidden community! The village had cows and rice paddies and everything else that villages have.. and was surrounded by cliffs and caves and the river! Super pretty. Then we went to a nearby "rock garden", a rice paddy with large boulders scattered randomly throughout. Neato.
Later that night we had our first reunion in Indo! Makassar was the first city we'd come back to, and Ika and Nhyla were the only people to see us a week after our first visit.

Tuesday April 16
Due to the delayed bus, we skipped Toraja and went straight back to Makassar. Arrived bright and early, met some new couchsurfers and had a shopping day. That evening we were invited to hang out with the couchsurfing community at a hotel.. and we got tired and it got late.. so we slept over. The first time in our entire trip that we spent the night in a fancy hotel... AND it was free because our friend lived there (everything fully paid by her work). Awesome.

Monday April 15
We caught our bus. We only had to wait 17 hours for it. SNE
The roads were a bit sketchy again today, and for the first time ever I was kicked off the bus (with everyone else) so that it could try to get up a muddy hill and across a skinny bridge without endangering all our lives.

Sunday April 14
Something new everyday. Wow. So today, believe it or not, I entrusted my life to my crazy brother. After another church service all in Indonesian, we jumped on motorbikes for another wonderful adventure. Only today, instead of both of us being passengers, Peter drove and I sat on the back! eek! But (clearly) I survived. Fwew.
Later that night we were to catch our bus to Toraja. We were told 3 buses came by that went that way, the first at 5pm and the rest.. well, after 5pm. So we waited. The first came by at 6:30pm, but only had one seat available, so we waited for the next one. And waited. And waited. And then a shop owner near the bus terminal offered us an outdoor bamboo bed and we fell asleep...

Saturday April 13
Unfortunately we had to leave Luwuk yesterday and jumped on a bus. This morning (4am) we arrived in Tentena and settled in at the house of a friend of friend. This house is right on the lake in Tentena, and by "right on the lake" I mean RIGHT on the lake. I think maybe 1/8 of the house is actually on land, but the rest is on poles suspended over the water.
We wandered around the town and the market and discovered some interesting meat for sale. Huh. I'd heard that it happens, but never before have I seen bat meat for sale!

Friday April 12
Got up early for another snorkeling excursion, but my brother didn't want to join me because his hair was fluffy and nicely shampooed. Silly boy. It's a little intimidating to snorkel alone, especially since I saw venomous snakes last time, but I got a little brave and ventured out on my own. I saw an eel! And then my uncle joined me and we went deeper and saw more things :) Cool!

Thursday April 11
Today we went to climb and explore Henga-henga waterfall. It was the tallest waterfall I'd seen in Indonesia yet, and in one of the nearby caves I found a bat jaw bone embedded in rock!
Later, we had Indonesian-style, spicy corn-on-the-cob for snack, and pizza for dinner!
Wednesday April 10
OOH WOW, best Something New yet! Today we tried out the snorkel gear at the beach near our house, and boy was it awesome! Less than 50metres from the shore was a whole new world! It was still only a few feet deep, but we saw sea snakes, blue starfish, clown fish and anemones, a plethora of coral varieties, and hundreds of fish! WOW! So awesome!

Tuesday April 9
A couple of new things today. I met a real, live tribesman today! A man from my aunt and uncle's former tribe came to visit. He was just as normal as anyone else, in case you're wondering ;) Also, we tried a new and delicious fruit dish, AND I went to my first Indonesian birthday party!

Monday April 8
Today we visited yet another gorgeous waterfall with the young adults from church. Uber fun! Something new: I saw my first indonesian snake! A little watersnake that we all did well to avoid.....
Then later on, my aunt made delicious chocolate pudding for dessert. I've never had pudding made from scratch before, it's always been from a package. SNE

Sunday April 7
I regret that it took me 40-something days for this to happen, but it finally did, so it's something new. Today I went to church in Indonesia for the first time! I got an Indonesian/English Bible! And I had an interesting lunch experience today too. We had sago.. which is essentially... slime. It's colourless and tasteless, and the local people don't "eat" it, they "swallow" it. It didn't go so well for me. As I choked it down, all I could think of was hagfish slime, thanks a lot Dr. Fudge! Something New Everyday. http://www.uoguelph.ca/atguelph/05-11-09/featuresslime.shtml

Saturday April 6
Today we did a lot of wonderful things, some of which I'd done before.. but then I met someone who had some pretty fantastic pets. A friend of mine has some pet hermit crabs, but today I met someone who has a large enclosure in his backyard filled with coconut crabs! These crabs are 10-ish inches across, they climb up trees and cut down coconuts, then they crack open the coconuts and eat them! They're jumbo! super cool. Something New Everyday.

Friday April 5
We made it! That boat finally left and finally arrived and we took a 7-hour bus ride and arrived in Luwuk at the home of our Aunt and Uncle! It was the first time they'd had visiters from North America in about 25 years, and the first time (obviously) that I'd visited them! SNE.

Thursday April 4
In order to leave Saroako, we took a car to a ferry, then a bus to a larger boat. That boat was to bring us to another bus which would take us to Luwuk, where our relatives live. All was working well until we reached that last boat, which apparently didn't leave until 2am. So much for trying to arrive in Luwuk tonight! If that transportation experience isn't new enough, this next thing certainly is! Just as I was about to lay down and nap on the boat I was swarmed by a mob of teenage girls! I mean, it's not like I'm Justin Bieber... but they did ask me if I knew him, and where I lived, and my age, and about weather, and a billion other things... and then I taught them how to do Sudokus :) Something New Everyday!

Wednesday April 3
Today our couchsurfing host had a family gathering and he invited us to come along. His Uncle had had a baby and was celebrating with a grand, muslim-style lunch. My brother and I had to borrow muslim-appropriate attire, and the whole affair was quite.. interesting. :) Something New Everyday.

Tuesday April 2
Arrived in Saroako yesterday and settled in. Today, our couchsurfing host took us to the most beautiful place in the world! I've seen Niagara Falls before, and it's big and nice and all, but the waterfalls of Mata Buntu, Saraoko are the most gorgeous cascades in the middle of a jungle paradise, wow! And then, in case that wasn't enough, we spent the afternoon at Saroako's lake and I snorkeled for the first time ever. We saw little, yellow, winged fish and some silver fish and some crabs. SNE.

Monday April 1
Yeah, didn't do anything today.

April fools! Ha... ha.. hum. Actually, it's true. What's new is that I didn't do anything, I completed ignored April Fools day for the first time ever. We were busy travelling and stuff, I don't even think I acknowledged it at all. Weird. SNE

Sunday March 31
Today is Easter, and what I've certainly never done on Easter before is visit lots of grave sites and caves filled with bones. Rantepao is certainly an interesting city with some interesting burial traditions. We joined a pair of tourists and spent the day exploring hills, trees, and caves filled with the dead. A great reminder of the power of Jesus who conquered death!

Saturday March 30
Have you ever neglected to study for an exam and decided to just "wing it"? Well, today's something new is extreme "winging it". We left Makassar and had plans to stay with a friend's parents in Makale city of the Toraja region. While en route I was trying to confirm these plans via text, but this friend was not responding at all. The information she had given us was "go to the market and ask for my mom, everyone knows her, go find her", which seems legit.. except for the fact that the market closes at 6pm and it was 8pm. While still on the bus I was calling our other contacts, looking for an alternative place to stay. Our friends gave us contact info for other friends in the city of Rantepao (also in the Toraja region, about 20min from Makale). As we were nearing Makale, we had to decide whether to stay on the bus or get off and look for our contact. At the very last possible moment we decided to get off and stick with our original plan. We found the closed up market (by now it was 9pm or so) with a few people walking about, asked if they knew our friend's mom, and sure enough, they did and they brought us to her house! Fwew! Success!

Friday March 29
Something New Everyday. Today we went to the beach of Samalona island and had some new beach experiences. The boys both got "stung" by invisible microbes.. which was weird.. but they definitely had selling red marks after we got out. Then we played frisbee for a bit and returned home in time for lunch. In that short-but-fun beach adventure I got very sunburnt! I've never got burned so fast before (and I don't want to again..)

Thursday March 28
This is a chill day, but something new did happen! We found a lovely internet cafe that had excellent milkshakes at wonderful prices. Never before have I purchased and consumed 3 milkshakes in the course of 5 hours.. at about 50 cents each. Wonderful!

Wednesday March 27
WARNING: long post. But it's worth it, there are 2 fun stories :)

Today we fought the system! Life in Indonesia (and other countries too sometimes) is all about bartering, especially for caucasians. So here's a fun story.

We went to a popular tourist attraction called Bantimurung waterfall, none for its caves and butterflies. The price for locals was 15,000 Rp and the price for Tourists 50,000Rp. We argued at the gate and tried to get half price for being students. They made up excuses and didn't budge, so we turned around.... and went for a walk.... and found another way in.. :)  The same guy that talked to us at the gate asked how we got in and where our ticket was, etc. We told him we went the other way where no tickets were necessary. Hehe. He tried to explain that tickets were necessary everywhere, but we played "misunderstanding foreigner" and after a little bit of fun on our part and a little bit of frustration on his part, we eventually got a ticket for 25,000Rp each (which is STILL more than locals pay, and STILL racist!). But we had a fun time.
The waterfall wasn't even that exciting, and there weren't many butterflies (because all the locals catch them, mount them, and sell them to tourists). But the caves were pretty cool. And that's another long story. We entered this one creepy cave called Gua Mimpi (Dream Cave) which had sketchy boardwalks which turned into rickety stairs and were followed by more sketchy boardwalks over cold water. My brother didn't want to go far for fear of "dropping his gear", mmhm, right. So I went in alone. I was talking to myself and to all the bats that I could hear screeching around me so I wouldn't freak out, which was fine, 'cause bats are cool. and I wasn't freaking out. But then, while my hand was on the railing and I was cautiously proceeding forward, I saw a very large (like, size-of-my-hand-large) spindly spider on the railing post in front of me. Then I immediately took my hands off the railings, freaked out a little bit, forgot that I was a biologist, neglected to take a photograph, turned around, and went back at 4x the speed I entered.

huh. Never done that before.
Tuesday March 26
Our first full day on the island of Sulawesi! We went to the University with a friend and explored the campus while she worked. I found the Bio department, but more specifically, I found the Zoology room (singular..). First time I'd seen my own faculty in another country!
We also explored an old dutch fort, Rotterdam, and shopped in a popular underground mall area. Cool!

Monday March 25
After 3 days in Bali the guys decided to me there was a 1 hour time difference. I wouldn't have minded so much if they weren't telling me at 5:25am (which I thought was 4:25am) when we planned to catch our taxi to the airport at 5:30am. That was a new and unpleasant experience..
We arrived in Makassar Sulawesi that evening, met our couchsurfing host for that city, and ate a new version of martabok: a classic Makassar version with veggies and egg. SNE

Sunday March 24
Woke up to gorgeous sunlight on a white and black sandy beach with clear blue water. The jellies were gone so we swam and then explored the solidified magma rocks nearby. After breakfast we spent the day hiking the hills to see Hindu temples. We stopped for a new and interesting snack on the way down (frozen/cold juice in a bag) and then got caught in a rain storm. We gave up on trying to stay dry, ransacked a few rambutan trees, sucked the fruit off some cocoa seeds, and eventually made it back to Denpassar, Bali.
Saturday March 23
Today we planned to set up camp on a beach, have a night swim in the ocean, and go visit temples in the morning. When we stepped in the water someone got stung and then we noticed tiny glowing jellyfish coming up with every wave! Cool!

Friday March 22
After leaving Java we arrived in Bali and met up with a Canadian couchsurfer! That night we went to my first ever lights-flashing-music-pounding beach party. Lots of new.

Thursday March 21
Today I got brave and ventured out on my own while Peter was getting his VISA renewed. I had a frustrating experience getting lost and finally giving in to the becak drivers (bicycle with a cart attached. the drivers sit at the side of the road or follow you down the road [loudly] offering transport) who then tried to rip me off. Eventually I made it to the BIRD MARKET which was super cool and filled with exotic birds, reptiles, civets, and more! It was a little bit not so cool though, because the living conditions of these animals was not prime.. but an interesting experience nonetheless.

Wednesday March 20
Something New Everyday. Today we wandered Yogyakarta city and saw a demonstration on how to make traditional Batik artwork. The process involves a series of alternating steps, where wax is added to fabric to cover and preserve the colour beneath, and the rest of the fabric is dyed. The second-to-end product shows the darkest paint over the entire canvas with paint and wax layers underneath. That is then boiled and all the wax comes off, revealing a colourful painting! If that didn't make any sense... see what wikipedia has to say! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batik

Tuesday March 19
Huh. SNE. Today we intended to see a famous temple, took a one hour bus to get there, and right at the gate we changed our minds. Never done that before.
The reason is because the local ticket costs 30,000Rp (about $3) per person, but "tourists" had to check in at a separate desk where the price was 190,000Rp (about $19) per person. While in Canada that may be a decent price for a famous attraction, we did not feel the need to support racism here. So we didn't go in.

Monday March 18
In case that boat experience wasn't thrilling enough, we arrived 4 hours late, missed our bus, and decided to walk to the train station because we had time. That is, we arrived in Jakarta at midnight, waited 2 hours and then walked 2 hours through the city with our huge backpacks. That whole experience was certainly new, and to top it off, we caught a legit chuggachuggachugga train to Yogyakarta. I've never been on a REAL train before! ;)
Sunday March 17
so... we caught our boat late last night.. and today.. um.
Something New Everyday. This is the first time I'd spent my entire day on a boat. yippee...

Saturday March 16
While waiting for evening when our next boat leaves, we decided to bake a cake! Only.. we didn't have an oven. Today was the first time I'd pulled together assorted ingredients and baked a cake in a toaster oven! Good work guys :)

Friday March 15
Went to Koba city to meet up with Sen again today, and we saw her family's business. They run a dentistry/fake-teeth-making business, with a variety store store front and a turtle farm out back. I saw two wild-come-captive pigs and lots of spiny shoftshell turtles. That was certainly new!

Thursday March 14
Something New Everyday. Today Edi took us to his family's Palm farm. Tonnes of palm trees whose fruits are harvested to make oil. Never seen that before! I also saw 4 tourquoise bee eater birds today and a barn owl, cool!
Wednesday March 13
We switched couchsurfers today and went to stay with Edi on the other side of the island. I met an Indonesian-speaking bird, and saw an active Tin mine for the first time ever!

Tuesday March 12
Lots of new today. Today was the first time I'd visited a Chinese Confucious Temple (the one we saw in Medan was Buddist), first time I'd played Chinese chess, and the first Indonesian beach I'd been to! At the beach we drank straight coconut juice with a straw, classic... but kinda gross actually. And THEN, I learned how to ride a motorcycle. SNE

Monday March 11
We made it to Bangka island yesterday afternoon, and today we wandered around town. I saw my first Indonesian lizards: 2 skinks! coool! Also, we tried some new food: Ketoprak, a peanut-sauce-covered traditional yum! SNE

Sunday March 10
Early this morning was the conclusion of our long, long trip to the harbour in Palembang, and what a conclusion it was. We ended up on the most unusual bus ever, this little bus had a disco ball and flashing lights, loud banging music, and a flashy music video playing up front. Definitely never had that before. What was funnier still, was that every person in that bus was sitting statue-still, completely ignoring the party around them ;)
Saturday March 9
I was worried that by spending an entire day on a bus I would miss out of something new, but fear not, it happened anyway! In the middle of our 10 hour bus ride from Sungai Penuh to Jambi we stopped for lunch in a small village. There I saw some cute kids with their pet chicks... only.. their pet chicks were BLUE! huh? They were dyed I guess.. but still, first time I'd seen blue chicks!
